Noel De Calabaza

Name – Noel De Calabaza
Country – United States
Type – Belgian Strong Dark Ale

Appearance – Pours a dark brown color with some ruby red highlights along the edges of the glass.  Big bubbly tannish head that leaves some good lacing.

Smell – As with most JP brews it has a yeasty funk with sour apples.  Some smokey hints and hints of oak as well

Taste – Sour apples, farmhouse like taste.  Cherries and other dark fruit mix with a chewy oak flavor.  Yeasty taste through out.  Some spices present as well.

Jolly Pumpkin is becoming a favorite of mine.  I really enjoy these sour takes on their ales.  A nice warming Belgian beer here with their classic farmhouse funk makes this a good one for a cold night, if you are in a cold climate.

Overall Grade – B+

I’ll be trying some of this when I get to Ann Arbor next week. You’ve certainly got me excited for it. JP is really taking American craft brewing into a wonderful sidetrack. Cheers.

@Matt – You are absolutely correct with what JP is doing.

@Phil – Have you had any of JP’s brews before? Or any sours? If you aren’t use to them it may take you by surprise.
