Lion Stout

Name – Lion Stout
Country – Sri Lanka
Type – Stout

Appearance – Pours an opaque black color with a big light brown head.

Smell – Dark chocolate scents with some roasted malts and coffee notes.

Taste – Wonderful blend of bitter chocolate and the roasted malts.  One not  overpowering the other.

The first time I ever heard of Lion Stout was Bob the Brit’s review over at my fellow beer blogger’s site, The Brew Club.  The bottle comes with an endorsement from the late Beer Hunter himself Michael Jackson, not that one.  It was the first time noticing it in the store so I had to go for it.  It is a wonderfully made beer from a country you really don’t think of as making good beer.  It is a good balance of the roasted malts and the chocolate characteristics.  While I don’t think it is my favorite stout of all time it is definitely in the top 5  and maybe even top 3.

Overall Grade – A

I still have never tried this. I know that people say it’s widely available, but I’ve not seen it.

I have never seen it at the store I normally go to. But I went to their store that is by my work and sure enough they had it there. So it does seem to be a bit difficult to find here too.

Hey Mike, thanks for the mention! I know Bob loved this stuff as well as the Lager they make. The brewery was started by British x-pats living in Sri Lanka so the Brits living there could have something that reminded them of the beer from home.

Scott – No problem. If I see the lager I will give that a shot too.

Nate – This was the first time I’ve seen it at all but I’ll see if cans start popping up.
