Trois Pistoles

Name – Trois Pistoles
Country – Canada
Type – Belgian Strong Dark Ale

Appearance – Pours a pretty murky deep brown color with a good sized tannish head.

Smell – Dark fruit and cherries along with some dark malt smells.  Slight Belgian yeast characteristic and a small alcohol burn in the nostrils.

Taste – You get the dark fruits again and a bit of a tartness to it with a cherry flavor.  Malts stand out for sure in this one.  Alcohol comes through slightly at first and even more so as it continues to warm up.

I have to say I’m a fan of Unibroue.  I know some people don’t care for them but a large amount of the brews from them I have had I end up liking.  This is another one on that list.  Very Belgian in character and very nice to sit back and sip.

Overall Grade – A-

I to really enjoyed this beer. It’s been over a year since I reviewed it, like you I found a very pleasant cherry zest to the beer. I think I’ve only had one beer from Unibroue that I didn’t care for, the apple beer. Their tripel, La fin du monde, is one of the best tripels I’ve ever had.

Cheers! btw, hows the homebrewing coming?

@Pete – I really enjoyed La Fin du Monde and Maudite.

I bottled my black IPA a couple weeks ago. I got way too much sediment in it. I got to do a better job with my filtering. I’m heading to Philly on Thursday for 10 days and to go to some Philly Beer Week events. When I come back I am going to do a Belgian dark/chocolate stout type deal. Shooting for something like 2 Turtle Doves and Terrapin’s Dark Side. Mike from THFB wrote me a recipe.
