Big Sound Scotch Ale

Name – Big Sound Scotch Ale
Country – United States
Type – Scotch Ale

Appearance – Pours a very deep red color that is more brown in the middle and then goes to red along the edges.  There is a big tan head that sticks around a bit.

Smell – Bready and sweet.  You get a good smell of cherries and a bit of the alcohol.

Taste – Sweet cherry flavor up front mixed with some bready notes.  It then gets a little malty and transitions into a nice roasted taste at the end.  As it warms up you get more of the alcohol bite.

This is actually the first Cigar City beer I ever tried.  Back in September Ed Roberts from Total Wine brought a bottle to the Boca Beer Lovers Meetup and we sampled it.  I remember liking it then so I was overjoyed when word came out that bottles would actually be making it here in the southern region of Florida.  Maybe it’s not as roasted or peaty as some Scotch ales but this one is pretty good and reminds me of Skull Splitter because of it’s sweetness.  A good one here from Cigar City again.

Overall Grade – A

Ooh. I’m glad to hear the raving review because it was like $13. Makes me want to leave work right now and go home to drink mine. The only other CC beer I’ve ever had is that Warmer Winter one.

You should definitely pick it up Rob but man you are missing out on some great stuff from them.

Glad to see you scored this one an *A*. My two favorite drinks are beer and Scotch, so I can’t wait to crack my bottle open. Finally being able to buy a bottle of Cigar City ANYTHING at a south Florida retail store was a great day for me and definitely great for local craft beer lovers.

I’ve only had a one or two of their beers (Dark Lord Day) but I’ve liked what I’ve had. They seem to be cranking out some very solid and wonderful beers.

Mike, I saw that Cigar City’s Warmer Winter Winter Warmer Brandy Aged was on tap at DLD. I haven’t had that version of it, just the regular. That is one of the ones I am sending to Nate in a trade along with this (Big Sound) and Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout. If you would like to do a trade for some of their stuff hit me up.

I did try that and it was good. I think I remember the Brandy not being so pronounced but it was still a good beer. I would like to trade but you may have to give me a bit of time. The job situation isn’t exactly ideal at this point, so the cash flow is low. When I’ve figured it out, I’d love to trade a bit.
