Double Dog
27 Apr
Name – Double Dog
Country – United States
Type – American Double IPA
Appearance – Poured a murky copper/reddish color. Really no head but it did leave some lacing.
Smell – Caramel like smell is apparent with citrusy and piney hop notes.
Taste – A nice big hop taste that is then very well balanced out with some sweet caramel and malts. It’s great to see such balance in a big beer. There is a slightly boozy taste to it especially when it warms up.
A really good all around DIPA. Love the balance of hops and malts in there. Flying Dog doesn’t play around with their big beers and this another of the Canis Major group that comes out on top.
Overall Grade – A-

Hmmm. I didn’t like this one that much, Mike. I didn’t find it to be balanced and thought that the booze you mentioned was the feature attraction. Considering your grade, I am going to have to try it again, though.
My wife is the DIPA connoisseur in our house. She likes this one. I personally can’t remember much about it, though I did drink it a few months ago. I do recall that I liked it better than other big beers of theirs, like their barleywine; which was a let down.
@Rob – The bottles I got were also a year old already so they probably are a lot more mellow than newer bottles.
@Nate – Wow you didn’t like Horn Dog? I really enjoyed it. So much so that I’m putting a bottle down for a bit.
Probably one of my favorite Flying Dog brews.
