The Kaiser

Name – The Kaiser
Country – United States
Type – Marzen

Appearance – Pours a clear ruby red color with a big white head that was gone pretty quick.

Smell – I have to say I didn’t pick up a whole lot on the nose.  Some subtle malts and a slight pick up of the alcohol.

Taste – This was quite boozy.  Not that alcohol type burn but you can definitely taste the alcohol in every sip.  It matched up very oddly with the sweet caramel malts that seemed like they wanted to come out but just were over powered.

I was not expecting the typical marzen based on it saying Imperial on the bottle and being a whopping 9.3% ABV.  I guess I just wasn’t expecting the alcohol taste to be so obvious.  The right flavor was in there but just way too subtle.  I was worth the try but I think I will just stick to lower ABV session Oktoberfest beers when I want one.

Overall Grade – D

whoah…i think this is the lowest grade I’ve seen on here. I am usually a pretty big fan of Avery’s top shelf stuff. I’ll have to give this a whirl.

I’ve had a few D grades before and I too normally like Avery’s seasonal and special brews. I think that along with that I really like marzens in the traditional sense really lowered my grade on this.

Hmmm. I almost grabbed this (because of the label) and knowing how much people generally like Avery stuff. Maybe its just a little strong for the style.

I think it is quite strong for the style. I’m all for experimenting with styles but I just personally did not care for this experimentation.
