Left Hand Oktoberfest

2 Sep

Name – Left Hand Oktoberfest
Country – United States
Type – Marzen

Appearance – Poured a clear amber color with a slightly off white head that was gone quickly.

Smell – Mild amount of malts and grains that were somewhat sweet in smell.

Taste – Pretty much the same with the smell.  It was rather subdued.  Some bread like qualities to it as well.

If there is one thing I love about the fall it is having some good Oktoberfest marzens.  I did quite a number of them last year and will try again this year.  This was my first of the season you could say.  While it has the normal characteristics of a marzen I can’t help but feel it fell a little flat.  Not as bold of a taste as other ones I have had.  But it’s not terrible in the slightest.  I could still go through a number of these with some brats or schnitzel.

Overall Grade – C

Warsteiner Oktoberfest

26 Sep

Name - Warsteiner Oktoberfest
Country - Germany
Type - Marzen

Appearance - Light orange/gold color with a nice sized white head.

Smell - The aroma is malty and slightly grainy.

Taste - The taste was very light of malts and bread.

With my recent Marzen kick in getting prepared for Oktoberfest I have to say that this one was a dissapointment.  The look and smell were nice but the taste just wasn’t there.  It seemed very weak to me and it just left me unfulfilled.

Overall Grade – D+

Oktoberfest’s Original Big Six Beers

22 Sep

So with Oktoberfest upon us you have noticed I have been doing a good deal of reviews on Oktoberfest styled beers.  I recently found this article on the big six of Oktoberfest.  I found that I have only had one of the six and as I recently reviewed it is my favorite Marzen out there, Spaten Oktoberfest.

This will mark my first, yeah I know pretty bad, trip to Oktoberfest.  Every other year I just forget or can’t find anyone else that wants to go.  I love lots of German styled beers and look forward to trying these other brews.

The big six are the following: Spaten Oktoberfest, Löwenbräu Oktoberfestbier, Augustiner, Hofbräu Oktoberfestbier, Paulaner and Hacker-Pschorr.  This can of course differ from place to place and person to person.  I have always heard good things about Löwenbräu and hope that the Lantana one will carry this.

If you check out the Events page on the site you will see the calender with the days of our local Oktoberfest.  I’m not sure which day I will be attending yet but I will be attending.  Once I know which one I will be going to I will post it.

Here is the article I read with this list.
