Name – Pilsner Urquell
Country – Czech Republic
Type – Czech Pilsner
Appearance – Poured a very clear golden color with a small white head that was gone very quickly.
Smell – Smells were primarily grainy with some hop and grass type notes to it.
Taste – Crisp, dry hop taste up front followed by a bitter, grainy taste that sort of lingers in your mouth afterward.
I have seen this one time and time again and just never took the time to give it a try. I was caught a little off guard with how strong a taste it had for a pilsner. Very grainy in my opinion but quite refreshing.
Overall Grade – B-

I used to pick this up back when I started getting into “fancy” beers. Back in those neanderthal days I snobbily thought that only good beers were imported…ha!
I love the taste of pilsner grains, so I’ll have to try this again. I recently brewed a pilsner, IPA style, and lagered it…an in interesting creation.

July 1, 2009 at 11:28 amIt think this one is probably a B or B- for me. I think Jever is a better version of classic Pilsner. This just goes to show you what happens when SAB buys your brewery, tears out your wooden vats, replaces them with cold stainless steel and cuts the hop and grain levels. I wish that I’d had this beer before the SAB group bought them out.
July 1, 2009 at 10:40 pmWatched a documentary on this beer a few months ago, it’s made in the czeck republic and the brewery grows its own hops and roasts its own grains and has been for the past few hundred years
July 2, 2009 at 9:27 amIt is made in the Czech republic. But don’t, for a second, believe that South Africa Brewers (also owner of MIller) hasn’t changed what I said. Miller lite could grow all it’s stuff on site, but it would still be the same recipe.
