Mike Loves Beer

West Palm Beach’s favorite dinner, Howley’s, is back with another one of their beer dinners.  This time joining them are the makers of gonzo beers themselves, Flying Dog.

Just take a look at the menu.

These dinners do tend to sell out so be sure that you call or email them to reserve your spot.  I think I will take a Flying Dog slogan and modify it for this.  Good Beer, Good Food, No Shit.

Name – Kerberos Tripel
Country – United States
Type – Tripel

Appearance – Pours a hazy golden orange color with a very small bit of a white head that is gone very fast.

Smell – Not a whole lot going on here.  It get some Belgian yeast smells and a faint bit of alcohol but that’s about it.

Taste – Some citrus sweetness with some bready qualities in there.  They yeasty quality is present as well as a bit of an alcohol burn at the end.

This was the final one of the Flying Dog Canis Major pack that I have not had and this was the least impressive of the bunch.  It seemed rather bland to me.  Not a lot going on in the nose or taste.  Other tripels I’ve had seem to have more going on.  Oh well we can’t win them all.  For a pack of four big beers to have 3 out of 4 be really good to me isn’t bad at all.

Name – Double Dog

Type – American Double IPA

Appearance – Poured a murky copper/reddish color.  Really no head but it did leave some lacing.

Smell – Caramel like smell is apparent with citrusy and piney hop notes.

Taste – A nice big hop taste that is then very well balanced out with some sweet caramel and malts.  It’s great to see such balance in a big beer.  There is a slightly boozy taste to it especially when it warms up.

A really good all around DIPA.  Love the balance of hops and malts in there.  Flying Dog doesn’t play around with their big beers and this another of the Canis Major group that comes out on top.

Overall Grade – A-
