St. Bernardus Abt 12

27 Jan

Name - St. Bernardus Abt 12
Country - Belgium
Type - Quadrupel

Appearance - A brownish color with some red highlights here and there. Very thin white head on it.

Smell - Lots of sweet fruit smells going on with hints of grape, apples and pears.

Taste - Very full body to it with lots of sweet malt flavors. Those fruit flavors are present in the taste as well. Very slight taste of alcohol.

I have long been told of St. Bernardus Abt 12 and finally took the time to give it a try. Had this at the Yardhouse in Palm Beach Gardens after the failed Jupiter Festival. I was extremely caught off guard by this as I was not expecting such a presence of fruit flavors and smells in it. It was good definitely but the fruit was a little too overpowering for my taste. I would definitely have it again when I visit there and maybe pick up a bottle on the occasion.

Overall Grade – B-

Chimay Grande Réserve (Blue)

27 Jul

Name - Chimay Grande Réserve (Blue)
Country - Belgium
Type - Belgian Strong Dark Ale

Appearance - Dark redish brown color with a fizzy off white head that disappeared quickly.

Smell - Smell of caramel and slight smell of berries.

Taste - Extremely carbonated that gives a full feeling in your stomach. A nutty taste at first followed by a very strong after taste similar to that of Imperials.

I’ve had may co workers say Chimay this and Chimay that so I thought I would give one a whirl. The blue has the highest alcohol content of the three so that might explain the after taste that I didn’t like to much. The smell was nice and initial taste was nice but the carbonation just made me feel full to quickly and again I didn’t like the after taste. But I will not let this stop me from trying the other two Chimay brews in the future.

Overall Grade – C-
