Lagunitas Brown Shugga

11 Jan

Name - Lagunitas Brown Shugga
Country - United States
Type - American Strong Ale

Appearance - A very nice amber almost red color with a slightly tan head.  A little disappointed that the head subsided rather quickly.

Smell - Nice sweet smell of caramel or maple syrup.

Taste - Very nice combination of sweet malts and the hops.  Hints of brown sugar (go figure).  The spicy hops add a little bit of bitterness to it which mixes well.

I just randomly came across this one at the store and decided to give it a try.  I had no idea what style it was but was happy to read it was an American Strong Ale.  It was overall a really good beer.  Great mix of the malts and hops to a nice sweet and slightly hoppy taste.  The lack of a long lasting head was the only flaw and that is no where close to something to turn me off to it.  Great beer.

Overall Grade – A-

Stone’s Arrogant Bastard Ale

21 Dec

Name - Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale
Country - United States
Type - American Strong Ale

Appearance – A beautiful deep red, almost brown, color with a tan head that laced the glass amazingly.

Smell - Strong hoppy smell with some sweet notes to it like grapefruit.

Taste - BIG HOPS! The hops mix well with nice malts that has a sweetness to it that goes very well and doesn’t cross over it the fruit side of things.

Stone has only been available in South Florida for about a month now and it seems to be taking beer lovers by storm. All the real beer stores carry it and even a local bar has this one on tap. The story on the back of the bottle is very enjoyable to read time after time. The flavors of strong hops and sweetness mix so extremely well for a smooth, great tasting beer. I must say that I think I am worthy to drink this one and believe it to be possibly my new favorite brew I have ever tasted. That is why this one gets a grade I have not given out yet.

Overall Grade – A+
