Satsuma Harvest Wit

2 Sep

Name – Satsuma Harvest Wit
Country – United States
Type – Witbier

Appearance – Pour a pretty hazy straw yellow color with a big white head.

Smell – Wheat and orange rind seem to be the main things I get.

Taste – Wheat, bitter orange, coriander and some other spices to it.  Has a pretty dry finish.

With the summer coming to a close I figure I would have a few of the left over summer beers I had picked up.  I had the Abita Strawberry wit when that was out and found it very unique so I picked this up.  Nothing really unique here though.  It is a pretty straight forward witbier, not that there’s anything wrong with that.  There is probably a bit more orange presence than normal but orange is pretty typical in this style.  I thought it was good for what it was but there are some other wits that I would rather have for the summer.

Overall Grade – C+

Whirlwind Witbier

31 May

Name – Whirlwind Witbier
Country – United States
Type – Witbier

Appearance – Poured a hazy pale yellow color.  Very thin, bubbly white head that was gone very quickly.  I’m surprised I was able to capture it in the picture.

Smell – Very typical witbier smells with citrus, yeast and some spice.

Taste – Again the taste is pretty straight forward as well.  Crisp citrus taste with the yeast.  Some spice like coriander is present as well.

This was a good pickup for the summer.  Crisp, refreshing and flavorful.  This is a great beer for after a hard day of manual labor or if you are just out at the pool.  I would recommend this one pretty highly as it is very close to the traditional German ones.

Overall Grade – B+

Wittekerke

19 Aug

Name – Wittekerke
Country – Belgium
Type – Witbier

Appearance – Poured a very hazy straw gold color with a big bubbly white head.

Smell – There is a really funky yeast smell to it.  Notes of wheat and lemon can be picked up too.

Taste – You definitely get the yeast and luckily the taste of it isn’t as strange as the smell.  You get some citrus tastes in there that is mostly lemon.

I went for the bottled version over the can on this review.  I made sure to give it a swirl at the end of the pour to get any sediment on the bottom of the bottle.  The smell was really strange and strong but the taste was exactly what you would expect from a witbier.  It was smooth and refreshing in the last few days of the summer.  Would give it a full B if not for the smell.

Overall Grade – B-
