Spaten Dunkel

30 Sep

Name – Spaten Dunkel
Country – Germany
Type – Munich Dunkel Lager

Appearance – Poured a very dark red that borders on brown with a tan head that was gone pretty quickly.

Smell – Toasted malts, caramel and little bready but all were pretty subtle.

Taste – The taste is not very robust either but you can pick up some caramel, malts and what was like toasted bread.

This one has been rather new to the shelves of the beer store lately and after sometime looking at it I decided to grab it.  Their Oktoberfest is probably my favorite marzen and Optimator is very good too.  But I found this one was just not as robust as the others with their style.  It was very easy to drink but the flavors and aromas didn’t just jump out at you.

Penn Dark

25 Feb

Name - Penn Dark
Country - United States
Type - Munich Dunkel Lager

Appearance - Poured a deep brown color with very minimal sand colored head.

Smell - Subtle smells that are mostly malts.  A bit of chocolate and a roasted smell to it.

Taste - Some sweet malts that have hints of chocolate and brown sugar.  A slight roasted taste at the end.

I love when you can find a lager that is not typical of what most of America has come to think of lagers.  This one does that from it’s dark color to completely different smells and tastes.  While not the best lager I’ve ever had this is definitely a good one and would recommend it.

Hofbräu Dunkel

1 Sep

Name - Hofbräu Dunkel
Country - Germany
Type - Dunkel Lager

Appearance - Deep red almost brown color.  The first glass produced a very small head that disappeared almost immediately but my second had a much fuller white frothy head.

Smell - Malty smell but was a little sweet like citrus.

Taste - Sweet taste similar to the smell.  A hint of honey.

Dunkel lagers are quickly becoming a favorite of mine and this one definitely is up there.  I kind of chose this one at random just because it was a dunkel.  I was not disappointed at all as it was a nice full taste that I was hoping for with that bit of sweetness.

Overall Grade – B+
