Yuengling Bock

1 Mar

Name – Yuengling Bock
Country – United States
Type – Bock

Appearance – Poured a very dark red that bordered on brown color.  Very bubbly off white head that disappears very quickly.

Smell – Roasted malts and a bit of nut.

Taste – Roasted and sweet malt flavors with a hint of nuts and spices.  There is an ever so slight hop profile there.

Being from Pennsylvania I was very excited to hear that Yuengling would be making the Bock again this year but even more excited that it would be put into bottles as opposed to draft only last year.  This is a pretty enjoyable bock overall and will definitely pick up some more before it is gone.

Sierra Nevada Glissade Golden Bock

22 Feb

Name – Sierra Nevada Glissade Golden Bock
Country – United States
Type – Maibock

Appearance – Pours a crystal clear light orange color with an almost finger wide white head that disappears very quickly.

Smell – The nose is very faint.  Some malts with a bit of earthy hops.

Taste – Sweet, bready malts pretty much through out and a hint of hops in there.  Very crisp finish.

It’s great seeing Sierra Nevada doing new things.  I know some geeks felt they just got so comfortable with what they had we weren’t going to see new things from them.  But they are definitely doing a good job with the new things.  Nothing crazy here on Glissade but it is a very nice and refreshing bock.  This could be a summer seasonal as well as a spring one.

Samuel Adams Winter Lager

30 Nov

Name – Samuel Adams Winter Lager
Country – United States
Type – Bock

Appearance – Poured a clear red color with a good sized white head that disappeared quickly.

Smell – Toasted malts with spices that can be picked up.

Taste – You get the spices right away; cinnamon and cloves I can pick out.  There is a caramel like sweetness as well as a bit of a toasted malt flavor.

I think this is a really good winter beer.  It has the spices and warming feeling like they should but isn’t overboard on those spices.  I also found a recipe to use this as a glaze for a ham that I might try for Christmas this year.
