Gumballhead

9 Mar

Name – Gumballhead
Country – United States
Type – American Pale Wheat Ale

Appearance – Pours a very hazy straw yellow color.  You see plenty of yeast floating around in it.  The head is pretty much non-existent.

Smell – Big, bold citrus hops is pretty much all I get.

Taste – Yeasty and malty with a bit of the hops coming back at the very end.

At first smell this comes across as an IPA but the bottle says it’s a Wheat Ale.  The bottle also says “It’s Not Normal” and I think that’s a fair assumption as well.  This is not your typical wheat beer but it’s not bad at all.  This is the first Three Floyds brew I’ve been able to review and what a way to be really introduced to them.

Don’t forget that I reviewed this at Dos Beerigos as well on their scale and it can be read here.

Wailua Wheat

31 Jul

Name – Wailua Wheat
Country – United States
Type – American Pale Wheat Ale

Appearance – Pours a pretty clear golden, almost orange, color with a very thin bubbly white head that was gone pretty quickly.

Smell – Really tough to pick up the scents.  There is a slight floral presence and very faint sweet fruit smell but didn’t remind me of passion fruit.

Taste – Slight bit of a fruit taste up front.  I can pick up some passion fruit in there and almost a slight raspberry taste as well as it was a little tart.  Tastes of yeast and wheat in there as expected and a slight spice to it.

My friend Ben asked that I review this as he has become a big fan of it.  I can definitely see that this is a good summer beer.  It is refreshing and light in body.  It reminds me a little bit of Sam Adams Blackberry Witbier.  Not the best wheat I’ve had but definitely not a bad choice for these hot, humid nights.

Rogue Somer Orange Honey Ale

8 Jul

Name – Rogue Somer Orange Honey Ale
Country – United States
Type – American Pale Wheat Ale

Appearance – Pours a cloudy blonde color with a big bubbly head.

Smell – Smell is of orange peel and some spices.

Taste – Sweet taste up front with notes of honey and orange.  Followed up by some spices and then a very floral taste that reminds me of what I believed was chamomeile in the Smuttynose Summer Weizen.

This was a new one on the shelves of my local store so I figured I would give it a try.  I like a good wheat beer during the summer, especially since it’s getting so hot down here in Florida lately.  Put these Pale Wheats throw me off.  They tend to have a big floral presence.  It’s not a complete turn off but takes me back to unpleasant days of being a little kid and trying to eat a flower petal or dandelion .  If you like traditional wheats by all means give it a try but it is not the traditional wheat.  Rogue dare to be different and they are with this one.
