Coney Island Lager

19 Oct

Name – Coney Island Lager
Country – United States
Type – American Amber Lager

Appearance – Pours a pretty clear reddish color with a good sized white head that was gone rather quick but left some good lacing on the glass.

Smell – Smells were pretty subdued but could get some malt and spices.

Taste – Crisp and clean grainy and malt taste.  Slight hops and spices going on.

I thought this was a pretty well balanced all around lager.  I think it’s perfect for sitting and watching the ball games this fall (Go Phillies).  More taste than you get from a lot of lagers out there sets this one above most.

Overall Grade – B+

Old Scratch Amber Lager

10 Feb

Name - Flying Dog’s Old Scratch Amber Lager
Country - United States
Type - American Amber Lager

Appearance - Pours an amber to copperish color with a very minimal head that went away quickly.

Smell - Sweet smells of caramel and apple.

Taste - Taste had an ever so slight roasted flavor to it with hints of apple as well.  Nice hoppy background to it.  Different taste for a lager but in a good way.

I haven’t reviewed a lager in some time so I felt it was needed and thought that Flying Dog was a well respected brewery that I should give their lager a try.  This isn’t your typical lager but Flying Dog seems to pride themselves on not being your typical brewery.  It has a nice sweet taste to it at first with a hoppyness right there from the middle to end.  You aren’t going to get this type of flavor in most lagers.  A good brew overall.

Overall Grade – B+
