Hoppin Frog Outta Kilter

21 Jul

Name – Hoppin Frog Outta Kilter
Country – United States
Type – Scotch Ale

Appearance – Pours a clear amber/red color with a big bubbly off white head.

Smell – Awesome nose here.  Lots of malts and caramel with some nutty and bready notes as well.

Taste – Very sweet and caramel like malts here again.  A little oakiness in there along with a slight Scotch taste.  There is some hop profile that just peaks out for a second then goes back into hiding.

One of the pick ups on my little beerventure I went on Friday.  The name is Outta Kilter and I think this beer was outta this world.  Absolutely lovely.  This is a great American version of a Scotch ale, probably my favorite so far.  Hoppin Frog needs to make that one more hop and come on down into South Florida.  I will be a very happy man when that happens and I can get a beer like this more regularly.  Again sorry for the bad pictures.  The batteries on the camera went and had to resort to the ever amazing camera of the iPhone.

Overall Grade – A

Sounds really good. Better than the Cigar City Big Sound? Soon enough we’ll get those Hoppin’ Frogs down here. Like your “one more hop” line!

I love Scotch ales (probably because I love Scotch and beer!). Like Rob asked, how does it compare to the Cigar City Big Sound Scotch Ale? I may grab another bottle of that at TW since they’re still available. The only Hoppin Frog I’ve had is the BORIS Imperial Stout at the social media meetup but it was damn good and I’d like to try more from them.

Yeah, hopping frog makes good stuff. They must mash at higher temps, because their stuff always has a substantial malty backbone. I’ll miss their stuff once I move in a few weeks.

Rob and Joel I would rate this above Big Sound. I know that sounds like sacrilege being in Florida but I just found it better and that’s not taking anything away from how good Big Sound is. Joel when you go to Knightly in Orlando I recommend getting one of these.

@Nate Where are you moving again? Wasn’t it Kansas City or somewhere around there?

Yeah…just lost my job, so it’s time to move. We’ll be living in Blue Springs, a suburb of KC. I’m looking for a job as we speak.

Hoppin Frog beers are available in parts of Florida. Please check us out on http://www.hoppinfrog.com Check with your favorite store that sells craft beer and maybe they can order it. Thank you for your interest in our beers.

Thanks for stopping by Fred. It’s awesome when someone with the brewery takes the time to come by.

While Hoppin Frog is in Central Florida, where I got this as well as BORIS previously, it isn’t down here in my neck of the woods South Florida yet. There is no distribution deal yet. If you do plan on expanding down further south in the state I would recommend talking to Fresh Beer Inc (http://www.freshbeerinc.com). They are run by great people that love craft beer.
