Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen

Name – Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen
Country – Germany
Type – Rauchbier

Appearance – Poured a very dark red with some almost brown or black areas in the middle.  Finger wide off white head that disappears quickly.

Smell – Woah! Smoke hits you as soon as you pop the cap off the bottle and start pouring.

Taste – Very smokey flavor with hints of roast malt and black licorice.  The smoke flavor lingers in your mouth for quite some time after sipping it.

This is my first rauchbier and I kind of new going in that this would be intense.  Even with my expectations of a smokey beer I was still caught off guard by it.  I think you really need to drink this while eating some good barbaque to really appreciate it to it’s fullest.  I just had it by itself and struggled through it.  That was a bad call on my part.  Next time I pick this up it will be in a plan for some good food off the grill.

Overall Grade – C+

Yeah, I’m not too sure I’d like this beer but I’d be willing to try it. I have a domestic version of this style from Boulder Brewing that I haven’t yet gotten up the nerve to try!

I think this is a beer that is simply terrific with pulled pork, brisket, or smoky ribs. I really enjoy it on it’s own, too…but not everyone does. Here is my recent review. http://thankheavenforbeer.com/2010/02/01/sip-with-us-saturday-review-of-aecht-schlenkerla-rauchbier-bamberg-marzen/

P.S. It’s certainly very smoked. Try their Smoked Wheat. The Wheat is not smoked in it, only the barley, so you might like it more.

Interesting suggestion Michael. To me, this sounds like a beer that would probably be more enjoyable with food as was mentioned rather than stand-alone. I had forgotten that Bob the Brit reviewed this beer on our site and he went into great detail about the beer’s background. Its rather interesting!

@Michael The Marzen is the only one that we get here that I know of but I’ll ask my friend if they have the ability to get the other ones.
