Stoudt’s Triple

18 Aug

Name – Stoudt’s Triple
Country – United States
Type – Tripel

Appearance – Pours a very bubbly orange with a bubbly white head that was gone pretty quick.

Smell – Fruity nose with apples and cherries being the big things I picked up.  Some yeasty smells to it as well.

Taste – Sweet malts that tasted like cherries with a slight alcohol burn at the end.

I would say this was a fairly average tripel.  Nothing exciting but nothing terribly wrong with it.  I prefer the St. Bernardus Tripel of the ones I have had.

Overall Grade – C

I used to live 20min from Stoudts, so I had the benefit of all their beer, fresh. The Abby Triple is a great beer, but I find the bottled version just okay, it certainly does lose something in the bottle as compared to fresh draft. Stoudts brews tremendous beers, some which don’t make it to bottle and mass market such as the double honey mai bock, which is mind blowing and a heafty 9.5%. If you ever get to go to the brewery, it’s work the trip and they have multiple brewfests during the summer with feature not only their brews, but often 30 or more other breweries.

I’ll be attending the Philly Beer Week next summer and hope that Stoudts brings out some special brews for that. That maibock sounds great!
