Rogue Somer Orange Honey Ale

8 Jul

Name – Rogue Somer Orange Honey Ale
Country – United States
Type – American Pale Wheat Ale

Appearance – Pours a cloudy blonde color with a big bubbly head.

Smell – Smell is of orange peel and some spices.

Taste – Sweet taste up front with notes of honey and orange.  Followed up by some spices and then a very floral taste that reminds me of what I believed was chamomeile in the Smuttynose Summer Weizen.

This was a new one on the shelves of my local store so I figured I would give it a try.  I like a good wheat beer during the summer, especially since it’s getting so hot down here in Florida lately.  Put these Pale Wheats throw me off.  They tend to have a big floral presence.  It’s not a complete turn off but takes me back to unpleasant days of being a little kid and trying to eat a flower petal or dandelion .  If you like traditional wheats by all means give it a try but it is not the traditional wheat.  Rogue dare to be different and they are with this one.

Overall Grade – C+

It’s funny that you mentioned the Smuttynose Summer Weizen and the Rogue Somer Orange Honey ale in the same post because I just bought them together blindly. I guess I’m in for more of the same all night!

HaHa. That’s pretty funny. Do come by after you try them and let me know what you thought of the Bogie. And thanks for stopping by.

So Mike, I figured I’d finally let you know what I thought of the two brews. First of all, they were both rather disappointing. I could definitely detect the floral notes on the Smutty. Besides that I thought it was a pretty forgettable beer which is tough for me to say since I’m usually a pretty huge fan of Smuttynose.

The first thing I noticed about the Rogue was the yellow color. Definitely a different shade than the Smutty. I noticed the sweetness in the taste but not much else. Rogue being known for some tremendous brews, this one just didn’t sit right with me. With the sweetness and minimal orange taste, it did not appeal to me.

I hope to be more positive in the future commenting on other beers! Keep up the good work.

Thanks for getting back and letting me know what you thought of them. I love Rogue because they make some really good brews but they also make some odd ones that just don’t site well with me. Chipotle Ale and Soba Ale just to name a couple were just not too good in my book. This one is just in the middle for me.

I haven’t tried some of Rogue’s more “exotic” brews. Typically, I’ll stick to old tried and true beers like Dead Guy Ale or Shakespeare Stout. When it comes to odd brews, Dogfish has been my choice recently. I have bottles of Theobroma and Sah’Tea in the fridge waiting.
