Samuel Smith’s Oatmeal Stout

Name – Samuel Smith’s Oatmeal Stout
Country – England
Type – Oatmeal Stout

Appearance – Poured an opaque black color with a big tan head.

Smell – Smells of roasted malts, oats and a very faint chocolate.

Taste – Roasted malts are prevalent with some chocolate notes and slight oatmeal taste in the middle. Very light in body compared to most stouts.

This has always been one of my all time favorite stouts but I just never got around to reviewing it until now. As I said it is lighter in body that a lot of stouts out there and that might add to my liking of it. Also the absence of too much of a coffee flavor makes me happy as well. One of my top 5 favorites of all time.

Overall Grade – A

That’s a very good beer. I think that I like their Imperial Stout more than this one. Their Tadcaster Porters is also very good. Let’s just face it, they don’t make any bad beer.

By the way, I’ll be drinking some of their stuff in London by Sunday Night. Can’t wait. There will be plenty about it on the site.

No I don’t think I have had a bad beer by them either. The Winter Welcome was so so but not bad. Have fun in London!

I must say that it is a toss up between this and the Porter. Both are fantastic in their own ways. However, I am yet to find an oatmeal stout as good as Samuel Smith’s! AND, Sam Smith offers alot of organic beers now too!

People seem to respond to Barney Flats by Anderson Valley. I don’t think it’s as good as Samuel Smith’s. Of course you haven’t had my Oatmeal Stout :), so you might not have ever have a better one. I drank BORIS the Crusher not too long ago…not as good either.

I intended to review this beer last month, but ran out of time! Still, I’m really looking forward to trying it soon. Sounds like a classic.

One of the best Oatmeal Stouts ever. This, like many other imports has to be fresh or it tastes like crap! If you choose to taste this stout, make sure you either get it at a pub with high turnover or a beer shop that prides itself on freshness.

Sam Smith is just a great brewery all around I feel. This and their Imperial Stout are outstanding. I understand freshness can make a difference for some beer but stouts can get better with age. Anyway I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad bottle of this.
